Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Major Alliance Forged Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
